PHELPS YOUTH PAVILION AND LOCKARD OFFICE BUILDING AWARDED BUILDING OF AMERICA AWARD
The Phelps Youth Pavilion at the Waterloo Center for the Arts and the Lockard Office Building were recently awarded the Construction & Real Estate Review Building of America Award. The buildings were individually selected for their unique design attributes. The Phelps Youth Pavilion is a 39,000 square foot addition that will address several critical needs for the Arts Center. It will move the nationally recognized Junior Art Gallery out of the basement, double the space and create a more secure, accessible area for the thousands of school children who visit each year. The Junior Art Gallery will offer unique hands-on activities for exploring art. A digital Arts Lab will merge art, creativity and technology. A new Ceramics Studio will provide a larger, better designed space for popular clay programs. Increased storage for the growing permanent art collection will be added, while improved receiving and preparation areas will allow the Center to secure loans of high quality art from other museums across the nation. The Lockard Companies office building is a 13,000 SF prairie style building with modern amenities and lots of natural light. Sustainability is improved through the installation of a geothermal heating and cooling system, day-lighting, energy-efficient direct/indirect lighting system, heat gain reducing thermal glazing, and programmable controls for the motorized window shades. Open office spaces in the core of the building receive borrowed natural light through translucent perimeter office walls. Expansion space is provided on the partially below-grade lower level. The small upper level is occupied by a large conference room reached by a unique open stair. The room affords expansive views to the surrounding plains and the mixed-use development that the building’s owner spearheaded. Both projects will be featured in the 2008 Central Plains edition of Construction & Real Estate Review magazine.
