How did you discover the architecture profession and why did you decide to study architecture?
I knew I wanted to become an architect since sixth grade. One of my art teachers announced to the class that the state was hosting a drawing competition of buildings in Iowa. I decided to enter the competition since I liked to draw and ended up placing third in the competition. I’ve been fascinated by architecture ever since.
How did you learn about INVISION and the internship opportunities available?
I learned about INVISION through an event at Iowa State. A few INVISION employees came in and presented the firm and their projects. Following the meeting, I spoke with Kerry Weig about the firm and possible internship opportunities, then reconnected with the firm through the Design Career Fair.
What type of work and projects did you experience in your summer internship?
During my two summer internships at INVISION I have had the privilege to work on numerous, different projects. This past summer I assisted with two healthcare master planning projects, which was a great way to get new experience since it’s something we don’t look at much in school. My other time at INVISION, I have assisted with a few small renovation projects. This has been an excellent opportunity to get some quick design and documenting experience in the real world.
What type of personal development opportunities did you experience during your summer internship?
I’ve been able to develop many new skills and enhance existing skills. During my second year of interning, INVISION granted me more responsibility and freedom in my design work. Many of the projects I have been assigned to help with are selected to help me develop in areas that are not covered as much in our education. Everyone in the office is always willing to help and is focused on me learning more than the work itself.
What was your favorite thing about your summer internship?
My favorite part is the way they allocate work for their interns. Many other firms stick their interns on documentation all summer, but here at INVISION interns are incorporated into every phase of a project throughout the summer to give them a well-rounded experience. By doing this, I feel I have really contributed to the work that the firm is doing. I’ve also learned so much from working in all the different project phases.
What stood out to you the most about your internship experience?
The office culture. Everyone in the studio is so welcoming to new staff and is so passionate about all the work they do. It is great knowing that if I ever have a problem, or need some direction on something, anyone in the studio would be happy me out and help me learn.
