Des Moines University Clinic and Academic Center
Des Moines, IA

The Academic Center renovations included a complete gut and remodel of the 1st and 5th floors. INVISION worked closely with the DMU’s Executive Leadership team to shift the narrative from traditional office design to a more open, collaborative space where more natural daylight was provided. The project included a new Board Room, conference spaces, teamwork areas, offices, kitchenette, public restrooms and integrated, but not obvious, storage areas for all staff to access. The Osteopathic Manual Medicine design within the clinic tower of DMU’s campus set the stage for future renovations. The design is configured into two clinical neighborhoods of four providers each with a centralized care team zone, offering a welcoming experience for all. Anticipating growth in the Physical Therapy program and service offering, DMU renovated a second 8,500 square foot floor in their clinic tower for an expanded Physical Therapy Clinic. The new space is designed to be welcoming, motivating, safe, and accessible.

The discovery process revealed that a renovation of several spaces on campus was needed to better align with the patient care and learning environments DMU was providing. Integration of natural light, modern finishes and pops of DMU branding enhanced the welcoming feel and arrival to the Des Moines University campus. We utilized full scale mock-ups and project tours to help the strategic team make decisions quickly and efficiently throughout the design process. Consistency in material pallet and efficient wayfinding has brought a cohesive look and feel to the spaces touched on campus. Working with DMU was a perfect blend of both INVISION’s healthcare and education markets.
