St. Paul Hyatt Place Custom House
St. Paul, MN

This downtown St. Paul development marks several firsts for the brand. The first five floors of this historic post office and custom house have been transformed into 149 hotel rooms, with 12 stories of housing above. This is not only one of the first Hyatts in an historic building, but also one of the first to include residential apartments. Rooms showcase 13-foot windows with views of downtown St. Paul, and guests have a fitness center, indoor pool, and Coffee to Cocktails lounge for their amenities.

One of the most impactful design elements was preserving the original sixteen-foot ceiling heights within the guest rooms as it was very challenging to the various stakeholders to imagine. Ultimately the extra high ceilings have been a big selling point for the hotel.

Cutting a six-story light well into the middle of the building was a challenge but allows the additional guest rooms access to natural light.

We think this property is the best Hyatt to date we have seen—not Hyatt Place—best Hyatt overall. The history, personal touches and unique features all add up to a home run.
