UIHC Iowa River Landing East
Coralville, IA

As an extension space at University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics’ Iowa River Landing, this outpatient clinic project includes 42,000 sq. ft. of interior development. Team-based care, low wait times, intuitive wayfinding and LEAN processes were important considerations in the design.

On-stage/off-stage clinic design with a focus on minimal wait times.

For this project, we used an on-stage/off-stage clinic design that organizes public and private spaces for optimal patient experience and staff efficiencies. Dual-entry exam rooms provide separate access for patients and staff. This gives patients a welcome free of behind-the-scenes activities, while staff can collaborate in spaces designed for team-based care.

To help achieve the goal of low-no wait times and give nurses more time for care, we designed simplified and space-efficient pause areas outside each pod of exam rooms. Once checked in, patients can follow straight-forward, color-coded wayfinding to an area outside their pod, in lieu of traditional-sized waiting rooms.

LEAN design is further supported with demountable glass partitions, modular furniture systems and centralized storage areas for maximum flexibility in maintaining an efficient healthcare environment.

This has been my favorite project so far and it’s not just because the space is amazing... it’s because the team is amazing!
