UIHC Heart and Vascular Center
Iowa City, IA

INVISION was called on to work with The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics to renovate approximately 32,000 sq. ft. of space in the former Clinical Cancer Center Clinic and Infusion Therapy space of the John Pappajohn Pavilion. The renovation yields an expanded and consolidated Heart and Vascular Center with ambulatory care clinic, cardiac rehabilitation services unit, non-invasive diagnostic testing laboratories and associated patient preparation and recovery facilities. Clinical research and education facilities are also integrated into this new ambulatory clinic and procedural setting. The project also consolidates faculty and staff offices to facilitate multidisciplinary collaboration.

We used a Lean Design process to help the staff investigate and refine their working process, resulting in a more efficient layout and better way to provide services. A pod concept, with a group of two-sided exam rooms surrounding a central team workspace, allows for on-stage/off-stage traffic patterns and efficient workflow.

Other team members: Eric Ritland and Bart Etheredge

We were able to bring together units that had previously worked separately, and offer a wide variety of spaces and functions in an efficient footprint.
