RiverLoop Amphitheatre & Expo Plaza
Waterloo, IA

The goal of this downtown revitalization process was to create a gathering place for civic events and re-establishe a connection with the Cedar Valley. The project includes a performance amphitheater with an acoustic shell structure, a trail system throughout the downtown Waterloo area, plaza spaces, dam improvements to increase recreation opportunities on the Cedar River, a playground for young children and interpretive sign components.

Amphitheater serves as a striking focal point and great community asset.

The upper plaza performance structure–the final component in planning efforts, features axial and orthogonal elements that sit in contrast to the nonlinear river elements. The amphitheater is visually striking with a fabric roof on steel columns, so as not to be touched by flood waters. Neutral stone and colored paving, in conjunction with specific LED lighting design, tie together prairie landscape elements that are native to the surrounding area.

This development has all come together to make it a great place to live. It has become a point of pride for our citizens and leaders.
