Duval County Public Schools partnered with RDB INVISION (formerly RDB Design Associates) and Cooper Carusi Collins Architects (CCCA) to reimagine a K‑5 prototype school into a dynamic, 21st century learning environment. Rather than a simple reuse of an existing model, the design team and district worked together to adapt and enhance the prototype, ensuring the school would foster engagement, collaboration, and cross-disciplinary learning opportunities.

The result is a facility designed with flexibility and community in mind. The one-story portion of the building includes a secure entry and administrative suite, along with a multipurpose cafeteria/auditorium, kitchen, and shared restrooms. A strategically placed fire wall separates these spaces from the classroom wings, allowing the multipurpose areas to be safely and independently used for after-hours school and community events.

Academic and collaborative spaces are housed in a two-story wing designed to encourage connection and exploration. The ground floor features a Media Center, Maker Space, Science and Technology labs, and an Art Room, each connected by movable glass walls to provide adaptable environments for group or individual learning. Above, classrooms are arranged in a two-story horseshoe configuration, enclosing secure outdoor learning courtyards and social gathering spaces that extend learning beyond the walls of the classroom.

This prototype reflects DCPS’s vision for schools that not only support today’s educational needs but also inspire curiosity, creativity, and community connection for years to come.
