The Grandview expansion of Finley Hospital created a state-of-the-art heart clinic, surgery department, sterile processing department and emergency department. INVISION worked with the owner and users to right-size the addition and deliver a template for future growth. With a large facility, and varying floor heights throughout, patient wayfinding and healthcare staff efficiency were also high priorities.
In addition to text-based signage, INVISION chose natural materials to provide an effective visual cue that is both calming and relaxing. The design team strategically placed the new surgery area to allow natural light into the hallways, promoting positive patient mindset.
The continuous glass belt-line allows for one-way patient views and defines the material transition on the exterior, from the brick base to the floating stone volume above. A modified use of existing exterior materials updated the face of the building, while also harmonizing with the surrounding hospital and medical office buildings. The network of parking lots and a “soft space” buffer zone folded in-between the adjacent buildings and the addition gives flexibility and relief from the dramatic variation in the terrain.
