INVISION was engaged to complete a Master Facility Plan in 2017 with the goal of understanding immediate, near-term, and long-term needs and develop a phased plan for their implementation. The identified initial phase included an addition and renovation to the main campus to enhance outpatient services including the Rural Health Clinic, Outpatient Specialty Clinics, Infusion Center, Conference Center, and Therapy and Rehabilitation Services.

Overall well-being and the experience for both patients and staff were a key informant to design decisions for this outpatient expansion. Providing a new patient entrance with a strong physical identity helps provide clearer wayfinding, clarifies registration, and allows patients to wait closer to the point of care. Views throughout the addition were carefully located to serve for both wayfinding and patient privacy. Low windows below living walls in the Rural Health Clinic provide privacy for patients while allowing natural light into the space. Infusion, a department commonly located in areas with limited daylight or views, was a key feature to this expansion. Its location adjacent to a secluded courtyard provides views and daylight to patients who will spend extended periods of time receiving treatments. With patient experience driving the design, the addition provides all visitors with visual, physical, and emotional access to a landscape where environment plays a key role in the healing process.

Working as a unified team towards a common goal throughout the design and construction process with hospital leadership, board members, engineers, and a construction manager had a huge impact on the overall success of the project. The addition was the first major construction project for the hospital in over fifteen years and addresses healthcare needs in the community while improving staff and departmental efficiencies. Many strategies were taken throughout the design process to plan with strategic intent and try to anticipate the needs of tomorrow to create a flexible environment that will serve the community into the future. Full-scale cardboard mock-ups of key areas along with virtual reality walkthroughs were among the tools used to create a successful space. We are excited to see how the facility evolves to continue to serve patients over the years to come.
