Mercy Comfort Health Center for Women

Clive, IA

INVISION was selected by MercyOne Des Moines to help lead the design of a comprehensive Women’s Center, offering integrated and coordinated health care in the first center of its kind in Iowa.

The design team focused on Mercy’s goal to create an innovative and patient-focused center that gives women the opportunity to connect with other women for preventive and specialty care services in one convenient location.

To streamline operations, reduce patient steps, and shorten visits, INVISION used patient mapping exercises, LEAN methodologies, and full-scale mock ups throughout the process. In the interest of time and budget, the project was phased, the design process was accelerated, and INVISION engaged with a large team of users early and often.

The center addition needed a strong physical presence and identity, as the existing building featured a heavy rhythm and symmetrical repetition through its materials. The design team created an innovative exterior entrance design featuring dramatic height and Corian cladding. The design incorporated spa-like finishes and elegant, high-performance glazing to leverage the healing qualities of daylight. Mercy Comfort Health Center for Women gives patients a welcoming, non-clinical, and comfortable atmosphere.

From the beginning of the project, the users hoped to create an inviting state-of-the-art facility that would serve the current and future needs. A key piece to creating a strong identity was the small, but impactful addition. This addition facilitated reworking the floor’s circulation path, helping bring daylight into the interior spaces which dramatically shifted the condition of its current state. Working with the users and leadership early in the project to identify their hopes, fears, and aesthetic preferences helped establish standards to create a facility that fit their unique needs. Design tools such as full-scale cardboard room mock-ups and tabletop exercises to layout equipment helped test and verify workflows throughout the design process helped ensure the facility would meet the beginning vision.
