Knoxville Hospital and Clinics

Knoxville, IA

The Knoxville Hospital & Clinics’ expansion focused on three key expansions — the 3,100-square-foot infusion clinic, 7,500-square-foot specialty clinic, and 2,250-square-foot administrative suite.

The facility is designed to provide a flexible healing environment, a mix of solid and glass partitions between bays with sliding doors, offering the option of privacy or connection. Biophilic elements are woven throughout, with natural tones and textures. Earth-toned flooring, wood-textured wall panels, and casework elements create a warm, welcoming atmosphere, while earthy green accent walls add subtle vibrancy. Thoughtful lighting design guides wayfinding and emphasizes key areas like the nurses station and hallways that connect to other clinics.

The exterior design complements the existing structure, using brick and split face CMU for a cohesive yet modern appearance. A three-dimensional brick pattern creates dynamic visual interest that shifts with sunlight conditions and is highlighted by feature lighting during evening and dawn hours. Metal fins adjacent to the windows provide sun control, while the southern canopy over the infusion windows was carefully designed to minimize glare, ensuring comfort for patients during long treatments. The canopy allows expansive glazing, offering patients expansive views and natural light without compromising comfort.

Flexibility and efficiency guided the design throughout the project. User studies informed the placement of staff work areas to support efficient workflows and close proximity to patient care spaces. Infusion bays and specialty exam rooms were designed to adapt over time. Administrative functions were relocated to a dedicated addition, improving departmental efficiency while creating space for future laboratory growth.

Daylight control was prioritized to ensure comfort for patients and staff. Thoughtfully integrated exterior lighting enhances the building’s aesthetic while illuminating the pedestrian walkway, establishing the addition as a cohesive extension of the campus and a clear new front face for the hospital.
