Emmanuel Family & Child Development Center

Kansas City, MO

Created to meet a growing need for quality childcare in an underserved area of Kansas City, the Emmanuel Family & Child Development Center more than doubled the capacity of its previous facility. The center serves 313 children, from infants through age five, and their families, making it one of the largest childcare providers in Kansas City.

The project was shaped by strong community support and a shared vision for a facility that would serve not only its children and families, but the surrounding neighborhood. In addition to childcare spaces, the center includes a subsidized health clinic and a 1,200-square-foot community room with a dedicated entrance, allowing it to serve the broader community outside regular childcare hours.

The building is organized around three outward-facing courtyards that bring natural light into the center and create secure outdoor spaces for children. Transparency between interior and exterior spaces allows the energy and activity of the center to connect with the surrounding community while maintaining a sense of safety and enclosure for its youngest occupants.
