The renovation of the University of Kansas MedWest Ambulatory Surgery Center reconfigured and updated the existing facility while preserving seven operating rooms and portions of the sterile core. The renovated center includes seven operating rooms, two procedure rooms, and 30 patient bays, along with a new mechanical system and upgraded electrical and nurse call systems.
Originally constructed in the early 2000s, the surgery center was reorganized to improve patient care, circulation, and use of space. Activity nodes positioned throughout the plan support staff workflow and provide clear points of care within the patient environment. Existing exterior windows and new interior glazing bring natural light deeper into patient and staff areas, while a warm, natural material palette contributes to a comfortable setting.
The project balanced the technical requirements of renovating an existing surgical environment with the opportunity to improve workflow, building systems, and the experience of patients and staff.
