Sun Life embraced a flexible approach to the workplace with the renovation of all four floors of its regional headquarters in Kansas City. Designed to support a free-address work model, the office provides employees with a variety of settings to choose from throughout the day, from benching workstations and private phone rooms to collaboration areas and large meeting spaces.
Workstations are positioned to maximize access to natural daylight along the building perimeter, while a large, well-appointed work café provides a central setting for dining, informal meetings, and collaborative work. Glass-front enclosed rooms and a modular, demountable wall system reinforce a sense of openness while allowing the workplace to adapt as needs evolve. Standardized room sizes provide additional flexibility for spaces to be repurposed over time.
The design incorporates Sun Life’s corporate standards for programming, space planning, furniture, lighting, and architectural finishes while introducing elements unique to the Kansas City office, creating a workplace that reflects the organization’s broader identity while responding to its local workforce.
